Urethane manufacturing process

Universal Urethane has provided a glossary
of terms that are used in our industry

At Universal Urethane we are experts in providing urethane roll coverings, Zero-Crush feed rolls and our new Zero-Thane snow plow blades. Driven by demand for our urethane products and polyurethane floor pads, we continue to expand our urethane manufacturing facilities and look for new ways to meet customer needs.
Compression molding – is a method of molding in which the molding material, generally preheated, is first placed in an open, heated mold cavity. The mold is closed with a top force or plug member, pressure is applied to force the material into contact with all mold areas, while heat and pressure are maintained until the molding material has cured.

Durometer – Durometer is one of several measures of the hardness of a material. Hardness may be defined as a material's resistance to permanent indentation.

Hypalon – Hypalon is a trademark for chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) synthetic rubber noted for its resistance to chemicals, temperature extremes, and ultraviolet light.

Injection molding – is a manufacturing process for producing parts from both thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic materials.

Mandrel segments – Segments attach to the mandrel to prevent damage and slippage of coiled metal sheet. They also fill space for larger inside diameter
metal coils.

Mandrel Sleeve – The sleeve fits over the mandrel to adapt its diameter to larger sizes.

MDI based urethane – diphenylmethane diisocyanate

Neoprene – Neoprene or polychloroprene is a family of synthetic rubbers that are produced by polymerization of chloroprene. It is used in a wide variety
of applications

Polyester urethane – a urethane system containing the ester polyol

Polyurethane – Polyurethane products are often called "urethanes". They should not be confused with the specific substance urethane, also known as ethyl carbamate. Polyurethanes are widely used in high resiliency flexible foam seating, rigid foam insulation panels, microcellular foam seals and gaskets, durable elastomeric wheels and tires, automotive suspension bushings, electrical potting compounds, high performance adhesives and sealants e.g during asbestos removal works, seals, gaskets, carpet underlay, and hard plastic parts.

Silicone rubber – Silicone rubber is a polymer that has a "backbone" of silicon-oxygen linkages, the same bond that is found in quartz, glass and sand.

TDI based urethane – Toluene diisocyanate

Transfer molding – This is an automated operation that combines compression-, molding, and transfer-molding processes. This combination has the good surface finish, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties obtained in compression molding and the high-automation capability and low cost of injection molding and transfer molding.

Urethane – Urethane has been produced commercially in the United States for well over 30 years. It is also known as a carbamate which are a group of organic compounds sharing a common functional group with the general structure -NH(CO)O-.

Urethane roll coverings – are made of durable Polyurethane materials in several
durometers. They are designed to fit on the O.D. of standard steel rollers, providing a cushioned, wear resistant. They protect the products from damages.
